Assessment of Functional Disability

Measuring functional disability can expand the physician’s understanding of the patient’s experience and optimize migraine management.1,2

Functional disability can be assessed by asking open-ended questions or using validated migraine-specific patient-reported outcome tools, such as:1,3,4

  • Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) questionnaire
  • 6-Item Headache Impact Test (HIT-6TM)
  • Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MSQ)
  • Migraine Functional Impact Questionnaire (MFIQ)

Use the Interactive Migraine Disability Calculator below to see how the impact of migraine may be assessed for your patients.

Note: These questions are adapted from the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) questionnaire. This tool is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease.

In addition, the following questions can help provide the physician with supplementary clinical information about the impact of migraine and medication history.5-7

Q1

How many migraine days have you had in the past month?

Q2

How many days per month do you take rescue (acute) medication to stop a migraine?

Q3

How many preventive medications have you taken since being diagnosed?

MIDAS Background

The MIDAS questionnaire is a brief, self-administered questionnaire designed to quantify headache-related disability over a 3-month period.5,6 The MIDAS score has been shown to have moderately high test-retest reliability in people who suffer from headache, and is correlated with clinical judgment regarding the need for medical care.5,6

A MIDAS score of ≥ 11 indicates moderately limiting disability, which can have implications on management approaches and treatment selection for patients.5-7

The Migraine Disability Assessment can be used to assess baseline disability and migraine impact. It also provides a score to measure clinically meaningful treatment outcomes.5-7
